Part of the Halo: A Fistful of Arrows - Adjunct section

Just like the latest re-issues of the Halo novels, A Fistful of Arrows will ultimately have a handful of extra content that will explore the universe of the graphic novel, and answer any lingering questions you may have.

Here's just the first. :)

One small discrepancy. I think the MA37 and the M392 DMR are used solely by Noble Team and the UNSC Army. If these guys are Marines/Navy, they'd use the MA5 or the BR55 Battle Rifle.

They don't use plasma pistols either. These are the guns the ODSTs had at the time of Halsey's arrival, not necessarily what they were outfitted with beforehand. :)

There are rumblings of longer stories in my sketchbook, but I would expect just doodles-for-fun in the near future following Fistful of Arrows. :)

I cannot begin to tell you how awesome it is to include information like this. Little things like this just give a huge wealth of information to flesh out the story to give the reader a more inclusive sight into what exactly is taking place.

For instance, I had honestly been wondering from the past scenes where exactly Jun had detonated the landing pad from since it didn't show him really move from setting the charges down below, so I figured he was down there, yet that's not the best place to be and he's near trees so it was bugging me a little. Now I know.

And knowing that there's a "Phantom Crash site" further tells me there's going to be more trouble for our fine heroes in the coming pages.

I'd love to see your interpretation of this Mark I and Mark II standard BDU's for the ODST's; as we don't get quite the fully up front display of such concepts in the previous pages so I'm curious as to what these distinctions really entail.

I'm glad you like it - this is the kind of stuff I love to read in books, too. And yeah, it's totally there to help me out on any of the stuff I couldn't figure out how to jam into the main storyline (had trouble with including showing Jun's exact location due to pacing issues - too much other exciting stuff was happening, and every panel means a lot of work from me, unlike in a movie where you could spend a few seconds establishing it.)

Looking at the future pages, I don't think I ever really get a chance to show a lot of the differences of the Mark I and II, but that's something I could definitely sketch up after I finish the story. Basically, Mark II is Halo 3/ODST style, and Mark I is Halo 2's ODST BDU, except where I could 'evolve' it to the Halo 3 style. So anything very distinct about the Halo 2 version remained the same, for example the chest piece and equipment belt. I 'evolved' the helmet, a lot of the pads, boots and pauldrons to the more iconic elements that we know now, especially since the Halo 2 versions felt very representational of these future visuals.

Nicely done! Just one question though, shouldn't Mac be in the Marine Corps instead of the Navy? I know Dare was Navy, but Mac seems awfully young for someone who had reached the rank of Navy Captain (O-6).

All of ONI is a part of the Navy. Part of the reason he's achieved that rank so quickly might be due to the fact that his adopted family had a lot of history with ONI, i.e. nepotism. :)

Oh, my bad. I was thinking of how high his rank was. I thought you meant he was like a Lieutenant or something (equivalent of Marine Captain, O-3). Yeah, nepotism makes sense, since it was hinted in Miranda Keyes' instance. Of course, it doesn't mean Mac's not a capable soldier. I just initially thought he'd be a lot older than 31 when he reaches the paygrade of an O-5.

Indeed, I think he's a good soldier, but his rank could have definitely been helped with a nudge or too.

Also, the main reason he's this age is because he's actually referencing a real person I know. :)

They really need you writing the side stories of Halo. Your attention to detail is impeccable, even on the less regular characters and all the way reading through A Fistful of Arrows, I felt like I was reading the official backstory of Reach.

Contact Harvest and 343's side stories within Legends and Evolutions either feel so foreign or done with such inaccuracy to Halo. But you on the otherhand set an incredible example and miss almost nothing and create a very entertaining story in the same theme as Halo simultaneously so well, it's almost easy to forget it's a member of the community creating this comic and not one of Halo's own crew.

I hope this lands you a job in Bungie or within the current Halo staff, because you're certainly worthy to do a damn good one.

I liked most of Evolutions and felt many were 'classic' Halo, but I definitely had some issues with Legends, not because it was anime, but due to its canon inaccuracies and sometimes VERY different tone and style (the laws that the Package's space combat obeys is VERY different from the laws of space combat we've seen in the games and novels for example).

Contact Harvest does feel a little foreign though, especially since it centers around a character we THINK we know, but views him when he's 25 years younger... But I'm glad that book exists for the Prophet's rise to power side-story. The three prophets encountering Medicant Bias was extremely exciting to the overall Halo canon.

Oh, and yeah, thank you for the wonderful comment! :D Going out to HaloFest in a few days to try and make my daydream happen. :)

Did I say Contact Harvest? Sorry, I meant Cole Protocol. Contact Harvest did somewhat venture off the beaten track, but the Covenant side of it was really the best part of it. It really detailed how the Human-Covenant war began. And Joesph Staten really did well retaining that Halo novel feel aswell as giving a big addition to the canon. All in all, it was a very detailed and interesting account of how the Human-Covenant began.
Cole Protocol on the other hand had very little to add to the canon, and really took a while before anything got really interesting. It's what I miss about the first three books. They were crucial reads filling in the gaps. I don't really get that sensation with the novels these days.

I'll admit I've only read half of the Evolutions stories, and I hear I missed the best ones that weren't animated for Waypoint, including Karen Traviss' (She does amazing work for the Gears franchise) short story, but those I did read feel like they're venturing too far outside of Halo's canon.

And man, don't get me started on the Package. Many of the shorts had flaws but good traits to appreciate. The Package had little to none for me.

And you are dearly welcome. You damn well enjoy HaloFest (because I won't get to. Not in person at least) and make your daydream happen!

I should. A storywriter friend of mine who's also a long term fan of the Halo fiction had a read and had many criticisms of the, shall we say, change of the known "facts" of Halo, the Forerunners and human history within the book. I guess like me, we're very attached to the old style of Halo when Bungie ran the show and really kept the Forerunner's more of a mystery.

Another person I had a healthy debate with had a more opposite opinion.

I should read it, just so I can either enjoy it and have my presumptions proven wrong, or not enjoy it but have that knowledge of reading it to have a constructive rather than presumptious opinion of it.

I found no conflicts with the Halo facts that I know - and it actually ADDS to the mystery and depth of the Forerunner puzzle.

If you ever loved the quote by Gravemind: "I, I am a monument to all your sins." and what that could mean, by metaphor or literal... I think you like the book. :)

I as well. Even if it's just a job to you, you have to do that job well, and if you're working on something that is a part of a much larger world, you have to do your research. :)

If you were a portrait artist, you wouldn't just make up the people you were supposed to be drawing would you? :P
