Dr. Halsey is one of my all time favorite characters in fiction. And that's considering the only official sources of canon containing her that I have witnessed first hand is Halo Reach the video game and 1 issue of The Fall of Reach comic book in which her part is very small. Everything else I know and admire about her was learned through Halopedia. She's so awesome, it's rather insane.
You should read the novels, there are quite a few chapters from her perspective - also, you should look up the hidden Reach radio transmissions. There's a few about Halsey that are really cool and shows how she's seen as almost evil to some (though we know that isn't true of course ). It just adds so much cool depth to this figure.
Oh and if you haven't read/explored Halsey's journal? Oh man, that's one of my favorite pieces of Halo ever.
Well the only novels that deal with that is Greg Bear's Forerunner Saga, and there's only one of those out now called Cryptum (which is a fantastic read).
But if you don't want to ruin the mystery of the Forerunners, ALL of the other novels deal with the Covenant War and fill in some awesome gaps. For Halsey-centric ones, I'd look at the Eric Nylund books (who created Halsey and wrote her Journal), Fall of Reach, First Strike, and Ghosts of Onyx.
Oh, I don't mind learning the mysteries of the Forerunner. And in fact, I already know plenty of them. What I said was, I disagree with them. They contradict the realism that I thought the Halo universe had established for itself. Highly advanced humans living side-by-side with the Forerunner thousands of years ago? Bullshit. I don't believe scientific findings have allowed a gap in time for this to have occurred.
Personally, I've found that the books account for all of the facts, or at least begin to. Greg Bear is a very smart man, and I believe the trilogy will continue to explain all our questions. He's great sci-fi writer, a Hugo and Nebula award winner, and his non-Halo work is ridiculously intelligent. I totally have faith in him.
Dude. I've been trying to get her journal for a long time. But between not being able to use PayPal, and having to pay $70 for Halo Reach Limited Edition at Target, I haven't been able to get the journal yet. I am adamant about acquiring it, even if I have to break into the Museum of Humanity.
